Those of you who like to get up nice and early may have noticed that there wasn’t the usual Monday edition of Eyes & Ears waiting in your inbox today.
That’s because I have some big news for you… tomorrow. So, please be patient for another 24 hours. The wait will be worth it.
In the meantime, here’s a little something on Sunderland’s latest addition to its cultural quarter. David Whetstone was rather impressed.
The inside story
If it were a book, then Sunderland’s Culture House could be a bestseller, writes David Whetstone in Cultured. North East - not that there’s any charge for admission.
His first impressions of the £27m addition to Sunderland’s cultural quarter were that it was large, boxy and angular, with expanses of pale brick. Architects FaulknerBrowns describe it as “a modern library, envisaged to provide a welcoming, inspiring space for the people of Sunderland to read, write and create”.
Director Leanne Littlewood said: “You don’t judge a book by its cover so I’d like people to reserve judgement until they see what’s inside.” It was always intended to be something different, she added. “There are curiosities all over the building.”
“I was about to find out that she wasn’t wrong,” said David.
